How You Can Easily Self-Publish A Book To Build Your Brand and Grow Your Business

It’s a gorgeous day in Napa Valley, California and I’ve joined some amazing women entrepreneurs who are authors or are publishing books. And I’ve learned that with self-publishing tools on the market and turn-key solutions, it’s easy to build your brand, enhance your position as an expert and increase your business by writing a book.

As Angela Langlotz, lawyer and author of “The Bullet Proof of Firearms – The Legal Secrets to Success Under Fire” tells me, her book proved to be the single largest lead generator for her legal practice. The book provides the firearms business executive with all the critical information it takes to increase business asset value, avoid lawsuits, and manage legal issues efficiently and economically. Branding, trademarks, patents, and corporate structuring are all covered in detail with a focus on the special needs of firearms industry companies. ”The goal was not to be a best seller or make money,” says Angela. It was really intended to be a marketing tool to establish her and her partner as experts. Using self publishing tools and a graphic artist to design the book cover, they released the book on Amazon. Then they distributed the book to people in the firearms industry. All of these steps led to more clients and an increase in revenue by 10x just for the trademark portion of her legal practice.

Strategy Steps

So this is how Angela and her partner executed on their strategy. Their business goal was to grow their client base among firearms business owners. They bought a couple of books that talked about what they wanted to write about and used them as a guide for structure and ideas of key information they wanted to include in their book. They didn’t plagiarize according to Angela. They simply took note of order of information and “need to include” topics in their book. They sat and wrote their own book, found an editor on a virtual consultant site, hired a book cover designer, and used the 48 Hour Books online publishing site to self publish. “It was 18 days from keyboard to ‘ding-dong’ on our doorstop,” Angela says. Within a couple of weeks they handed out hard copies of their book at a trade show for the firearms industry. For them, it was a $4 marketing asset that provided useful and relevant information that they gave away for free. It immediately established them as the leading legal experts for this industry and lead to a surge in new clients. Another tip: they strategically used keywords for that industry for the book title so it would lead to high rankings in Amazon and search engines.

Alicia Dunams, Creator of Bestseller In a Weekend

I met Angela at workshop by my friend Alicia Dunams, creator of the workshop “Bestseller in a Weekend”. I’m using this strategy and writing a book geared to target clients for my strategic consulting firm. Like most entrepreneurs, I’m so busy that it’s easier for me to get in a room for a dedicated time period and knock it out which is why I’m joining Alicia’s next workshop.

Here’s to your business success my dear friends!

Speaking of getting ideas from another book, I remember this tip about building relationships. You can call your version as some sort of a derivative work. You have to give credit to the person who actually wrote the original idea. Give him or her a heads up that you based what you’ve included in your book on the ideas that he or she has shared in his or her own book.
